07 Jan Athletes Foot (Help with Orthotics)
Athletes foot is a very common contagious fungal infection of the foot. Usually seen between the toes or on the plantar section of the foot. It is characterised by sore skin that can crack, bleed and cause various levels of discomfort.
Signs of the infection can be found in individuals whose feet have become excessively sweaty whilst wearing tight fitting shoes or where the skin is already broken.
To stop the spread of the infection it is important not to walk barefoot, keep your feet dry and change socks and shoes regularly if feet are particularly sweaty and avoid shoes made of synthetic material.
Attention is important to stop the spread of the infection to the toenails. Treatment is usually over the counter remedies from your pharmacist with various creams, sprays or powders available for home treatment in adults. Advice from your GP should be sought if infection is present, you are diabetic or have a weakened immune system.
